I sang Karokee with my Grandma and her friends in her living room today. Not exactly what one expects to do when visiting for the reason that I am here but, then again this is my family.
They live large and loud.
My Grandma belongs to an Organ Club and the first Saturday of every month she hosts a party at her her house where all these old people gather together to eat, drink and party. She did not think that this Saturday should be any different just because Monday she is having part of her lung removed. So they all showed up at 3:00 pm and drank cheap wine.
And sang old songs to Organ music.
On an honest to goodness karokee machine that my grandma owns for petes sake. And we ate meatballs on toothpicks. And little weenies.
I love old people. People in their seventies and eighties have nothing to prove and just let it all hang out If they tell you are pretty, you probably are. If they tell you you are fat, you probably are.
I was introduced to one lady and this other one kept trying to tell her where I was from......I quote:
"I really don't care where you are from missy, I'm old."
I laughed so hard I almost peed my pants.
I haven't even told the tale of my trip here yet...
I dream in color, write poetry, talk about God, parent kids and finally wonder about it all

ReplyDeleteI would have to agree....I love old people. They are brutally honest, but you gotta love em! :) Sounds like you are having a great visit with your grandma! I am glad (wish it was under better circumstances, however). I continue to keep your family in my prayers. I hope your grandma's surgery goes well and she recovers quickly! Please take care.

Christina,
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your G-ma has her spirit in tack. This is the strength from within that she'll draw from... She will need and use this to recover from her surgery on Monday.
I will continue to say many prayers for her and for your family. I wish there was more I could do. Every post brings me a step closer to you and the many wonderful memories I have of you and your amazing family... Know that I am here if you need anything!!!

ps; savor those meatballs and weenies... for it will be some time till we serve these to our friends and family...hahaha
THere is wisdom in their souls..and I have always been attracted to that...the life that they have lived, we all have a story..I was always intrigued and listened intently as the older folk spoke, still do...and that realization, I will be there someday...
ReplyDeleteMade me smile Christina...
Not used to our east coast time??? LOL
You are so close and then again, not...
Peace and my thoughts are with you!
I love hearing their stories. So much wisdom. I wonder if I'll ever get there. Good luck on the surgery!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteChristina, may all be well with your grandmother, your mother, your extended family and certainly yourself.
ReplyDeleteFor you and yours we shall pray, in our own inimitable fashion.
I can tell you are going to be like my mother. She's eighty-three years old and she still refers to (other) old women as "little old ladies." Even thought she IS one. LOL!
ReplyDeleteIn Patti's 24/7 care facility age dominates residents admittance and much of the energy you describe is true in spite of physical dependency. I've read of colleges that have students 'spend' X amount of time paired with and visiting with residents of nursing homes as part of social science courses. In their life stories is so much more than can be "taught".
