School budgets and teachers get way too frenzied, forgetting that there are little hearts tied to the projects they are doing...Never make a eight year PICK which parent gets a valentine because I guarantee that he or she will still be crying about it on March 5th and somewhere a Sunday School teacher will be holding them close. (At least I hope that is what will happen to the poor child.)
Threw her sobs this darling little girl told me every holiday her class makes presents for their parents and she always has to pick which one gets the gift. She wanted to know how she was suppose to make that decision?
She said: "I love them both. If they'd just get back together, then I wouldn't have to make these kinds of choices."
God, having a sense of humor, put me as her teacher because I have made those choices myself and know what she is talking about. Together we decided since we couldn't change the school budgets, when she had to make a choice of who got the gift, she would take a piece of notebook paper and make a letter to the other parent telling them how much she loves them. Then she'd draw pictures for the holiday and give the unchosen parent the letter instead. The other parent would never know they were not chosen for the gift. She liked that idea.
I promised her that the parent with the letter would think they got the best gift.
Lord please let me be right on this one...at least she stopped crying.
(The saddest part is I am friends with her mother...and I can't tell her mother about this because it would break the trust of this little girl.)
I think you did good Christina. :)
ReplyDeleteGood move, Christina. I think your suggestion will work out nicely.

Well done Christina, she is lucky to have someone with a heart to help her with this. It's tuff no matter what the age of the child, but I believe you gave good advice.
ReplyDeleteSmiles..
Great decision! And the other parent WILL get the best gift.
ReplyDeleteI am sure not the hero...this little girl is.
ReplyDeleteHow it broke my heart, we forget, us adults that these kids have real pain.
I am so thankful she had you and your words of wisdom at that moment. You can be my mom ;-) Beth
ReplyDeleteI truly believe God put you "there" for all the right reasons. I trust in fate. right place... right time...
